We visited three different areas of West Virginia on separate days. First, we drove through Wheeling and the northern panhandle. Next, we spent a morning at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park in the eastern panhandle. In Harpers Ferry, we toured the town and hiked part of the Appalachian Trail across the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers. This was also a site on the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail.
In southern West Virginia, we visited what was then called New River Gorge National River (now called New River Gorge National Park) where we drove the scenic Fayette Station Road beneath the New River Gorge Bridge, then took the bridge back across the New River.
We also visited the Glade Creek Grist Mill in Babcock State Park and viewed the overlook at Hawks Nest State Park. Driving to Charleston, we stopped at Cathedral Falls and Kanawha Falls near Gauley Bridge, visited the West Virginia State Capitol, and spent a night overlooking the Kanawha Riverfront.
