We drove through western North Dakota, visiting both the north and south units of Theodore Roosevelt National Park. In the south unit we drove the scenic loop through the badlands, saw some bison, and hiked to overlooks on several trails. In the north unit we hiked along the Little Missouri River, drove the scenic drive, and stopped at several of the overlooks to see the grand vistas.
After spending a night in Williston, we spent the next day touring Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site and Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site. We also visited the North Dakota State Capitol in Bismarck and had some great pizza at MacKenzie River Pizza.
