We flew to the Portland International Jetport to begin a weeklong trip around New England. In York, we visited the Cape Neddick Light Station, also called the "Nubble Lighthouse". This famous scenic lighthouse was built in 1879 and sits on a small island just off Cape Neddick Point. After viewing the lighthouse, we headed north on US-1 to Saco for a great lobster dinner at Sea Salt Lobster.
Back in Portland, we finished our trip with a visit to Fort Williams Park where we saw the Portland Head Light. Built in 1791, Portland Head Light is the oldest lighthouse in Maine. After hiking to several overlooks along the Cliffwalk Trail, we headed to the rocky beach at Ship Cove where we could see the nearby Ram Island Ledge Light in the distance. Before leaving, we also saw the remains of Battery Keyes and the 1850's Goddard Mansion ruins.
Driving east through Maine we visited the State Capitol in Augusta, then drove to Bangor before heading south to the coast. In Bar Harbor, we visited Acadia National Park where we drove the scenic tour road, saw the Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse, hiked some of the carriage roads, and drove to the summit of Cadillac Mountain.
We also visited some of the shops in downtown Bar Harbor and had a great seafood meal at Galyn's. We then drove south along the coast to Portland, stopping to tour Fort Knox State Park, ride to the top of the Penobscot Narrows Bridge Observatory, and have another great seafood dinner at the historic Moody's Diner.
